Ennis House

MATT Construction worked with Frank Lloyd Wright’s grandson, Eric Lloyd Wright, to complete the structural renovation and restoration of the Ennis House, the largest of the four Frank Lloyd Wright homes built in the Los Angeles area from 1924-1925. The house was severely damaged during the 1994 Northridge earthquake and again in 2005, when Los Angeles received an unprecedented amount of rainfall. In danger of collapsing, the Ennis House was placed on the 11 Most Endangered List by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. MATT’s team replaced the retaining wall with a massive pre-cast concrete structural frame, stablizing the house and the hillside. The team also replaced over 4,000 textile concrete blocks, while completely re-roofing the structure and restoring the interior wood floors, ceilings and art glass windows. This project was recognized in 2008 with several awards, including the Los Angeles Conservancy Preservation Award, the Los Angeles Business Council Preservation Award, the Los Angeles AIA Preservation Award and the California Preservation Design Award.
