326,000 sq. ft.
MATT Construction added a conservatory, student residence to the Colburn School’s existing campus on Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles, expanding school facilities by 326,000 sq. ft. The addition comprises two high-rise towers, one ten-story and one twelve-story, connected by a glass-walled bridge. A new public and private plaza links the addition to the existing campus. The structures employ a concrete frame with façades featuring a combination of terracotta tile rain screen, zinc paneling, brick, pre-cast concrete panels, and glass curtainwall.
The mixed-use configuration includes subterranean parking for 155 cars, academic uses in the first 5 levels above the parking floors, and housing occupying the remaining levels of the new towers. At street level is a new 200-seat theatre and performance lab with a control room, a green room, and an acoustical reflector ceiling perfect for auditions, small recitals, and lectures with audio-visual presentations. The building also features a 3,600 sq. ft. Orchestral Rehearsal Hall suited for performers ranging from individual soloists to a 50-piece orchestra; a recording studio; 50 practice rooms; a library; classrooms; and instructional studios. All performance and practice spaces are acoustically isolated.
On the upper floors of the buildings is Colburn School Conservatory of Music student housing, with 47 residential units providing a total of 154 bedrooms for the conservatory’s college level students. Other building amenities include a cafeteria, the “Colburn Café,” a student lounge, game room, laundry room, and exercise facility.
