Project Size

Classrooms: 33,400 sq. ft.Parking Garage: 73,100 sq. ft.

On a site not much larger than the building’s footprint, the LEED Silver Arts and Education Center (AEC) is constructed above a 2-story, 73,100 sq. ft. partly-subterranean parking garage and provides instructional spaces customized for diverse performing and visual arts; flexible classrooms to relieve overcrowding; a new faculty resource center; an art gallery; and outdoor learning spaces, terraces, and gardens; all organized in a physical design that encourages interaction, collaboration and instructional cross-pollination. New technologies and multi-media are used throughout. The parking garage and a new traffic signal improve traffic circulation on campus and neighboring streets.

From the street, AEC appears to be three oblong 2-story buildings. It actually comprises 7 distinct buildings arranged with the 3 visible orthogonal elements atop 4 skewed elements, interconnected by corridors, open and landscaped spaces, stairways and an elevator. Special feeatures include an orchestra room with acoustic-dampening ceiling, choir room with risers, two fully equipped, sound-isolated recording studios with high tech recording and editing equipment for music and video/new media production, art gallery/screening room with noise dampening and AV equipment, dance studios with advanced sound systems and resilient floors, ceramics studio with outdoor kilns, photography classroom with multi-sink darkroom, drama room, Visual Arts Annex, Art seminar room, Music composition room and Digital laboratory.
