Virtual Construction / Building Information Modeling (BIM)

An early adopter of BIM technology, MATT Construction appointed a full time senior BIM manager in 1999, and is now utilizing BIM software in more than 90% of its projects. As the technology has evolved, we have advanced our processes and made a strong commitment to providing continuing education for key managers at all levels of corporate responsibility. In-house experience and proficiency with the latest BIM tools afford MATT better control of how information is processed, and allow us to disseminate critical project information to the team visually, in real-time. We believe that BIM is a powerful testing and communication tool that facilitates heightened levels of collaboration between the design team, the building team and the client.

3D Modeling

While there are various ways to utilize 3D Modeling on projects, MATT has experienced the greatest benefit when the entire design and preconstruction team works in 3D with BIM software. Our MEPF Subcontractors work collaboratively with the design team to develop fully coordinated 3D Models. This enables the team to work through design issues and resolve them prior to start of construction. Shop drawings are approved well before start of installations and productivity by our subcontractors is greatly enhanced. On projects that were not initially designed in 3D, MATT has the in-house capability to take the lead, developing complete structural and architectural models.

4D Scheduling

MATT uses BIM’s 4D capabilities to communicate scheduling and phasing of the work to its subcontractors and workforce. Weekly web meetings provide schedule status updates in real-time, with sequencing communicated through the 4D model.

BIMs Full Life Cycle Capabilities

With the BIM tools currently available, MATT can incorporate into the model all of the necessary product and systems data that would ordinarily be passed on to the owner or facilities manager in rolls of drawings and stacks of binders. At MATT we have embraced BIM’s “full life cycle” capabilities for use in systems monitoring, control and maintenance of the building.
