MATT Construction Earns CEA Excellence in Safety Award for the Sixth Year in a Row

The Construction Employers’ Association (CEA) grants the Excellence in Safety Award to unionized building contractors that demonstrate leading safety practices and meet rigorous benchmarks. To qualify, firms typically must meet criteria such as a Total Incident Rate (TIR) at least 25% below the industry average, a Lost-Workday Incident Rate at least 25% below the industry average, an Experience Modification Rate (EMR) below 1.0 with flat or negative trends, and maintenance of an active, documented safety training program.

MATT Construction has been named a recipient of this award for the sixth consecutive year, an honor spanning 2020 through 2025. For more than 20 years, the CEA Safety Program has recognized member firms with outstanding safety programs, evaluating the practices, training, and jobsite culture that keep crews protected on some of the region’s most demanding projects.

Safety as a daily practice, not a policy

MATT’s safety strategy starts long before a project breaks ground. Hazard analysis is built into preconstruction planning, and that groundwork is what makes jobsite protocols effective once work is underway. MATT works closely with project owners to exceed Cal/OSHA requirements, aiming to protect not just construction personnel but the surrounding community as well.

MATT’s superintendents work directly alongside subcontractors on every jobsite, adapting protocols in real time as conditions change. Every project holds weekly site safety meetings that all MATT employees are required to attend, with subcontractors either invited or required to hold their own. It’s a rhythm that keeps every party on a job aligned on risk, coordination, and accountability, not just at kickoff, but throughout the life of the project.

Earning this distinction once is meaningful. Earning it six years running reflects something built into how MATT operates at every level

Six consecutive years of CEA recognition isn’t the result of a single policy or a single project team, it’s the product of a culture that holds steady across every jobsite, every subcontractor relationship, and every phase of construction. From the hazard assessments done before a shovel hits the ground to the weekly meetings that keep crews aligned throughout a project’s life, MATT’s approach to safety is woven into the way the company builds. As MATT continues to take on some of the region’s most demanding projects, that commitment remains constant: every hazard anticipated, every team member accountable, and every person on-site going home safe.
