Google Spruce Goose Playa Vista Tech Campus Receives International Accolades For Its Bold Design

Google’s new 450,000+ sf tech campus in Playa Vista rescued and revitalized a historic wooden hangar originally built in 1943 to house Howard Hughes’ Hercules IV airplane, fondly referred to as the Spruce Goose. The adaptive reuse project has garnered international attention and accolades for its ambitious transformation of the defunct space into a four-story office building that fits the evolving needs of a global tech giant while also preserving as much of the original wooden fabric as possible.

Inside this “building-within-a-building” concept, three levels plus mezzanine flow out along either side of a fully restored central spine that divides the building. MATT’s team also built out two fully rigged, 11,000 sf sound stages within the renovated structure.
